What’s your secret weapon?

What’s your secret weapon?

I’ve been pouring through the results of the New Writers SIG interest survey. Besides being completely blown away at the number of responses, I’m surprised that the topics I’d suggested didn’t get about equal votes as I’d expected. There is a very clear front-runner in Tech Comm Toolbelt: Tools to Help You Do Your Job [...]

Tools for assessing accessibility

I ran across an excellent blog post from Angela Colter on the tools she uses to conduct accessibility reviews for her clients’ projects. This is a very practical post full of excellent resources.

She notes:

The purpose of the review is to identify barriers on the page that would prevent someone who has a disability–or who is using an assistive technology–from using or understanding the content on the web page.

Because the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG 2.0) are pretty extensive, and because there’s no tool that will automatically identify all the accessibility barriers in a web page, I use a variety of tools to help me figure out where the barriers are and what’s causing them.

The tools Angela references are all useful for assessing accessibility for technical documents, as well (though as she points out, these tools are poor substitute for testing your documents with users with disabilities).

We need Web editors for this site!

Now that we’ve increased the power of our site by rebuilding it on the WordPress content management system, we need to put together a team of volunteer Web editors to make sure new content is posted to the site in a timely fashion and with the highest standards of quality.

Duties will include editing and publishing user-generated content (posts to the Job Center, Tips & Tricks, and News sections) and moderating user comments.

No particular technical skills are required; I’ll train the team on how to manage content using WordPress. I expect time commitment will vary depending on how much content the chapter generates, but my goal is to keep things down to an hour or two per editor each week.

This is a great opportunity to serve the chapter while gaining blogging and Web publishing experience. Interested or have questions? Leave a comment, and I will be in touch soon.

Technical/Technical Writer?

From a recruiter:

Does anyone know of a Tech Writer that previously worked as a SQL DBA or .net Developer?

If so I have an opportunity I could use your help on, if you could pass this along. I will pay a nice finder’s fee for your assistance.

Thanks,
